Therapy for Looked After and Adopted Children
The Child Psychology Service provides psychological therapy for children, adolescents and their families who are experiencing social, emotional or behavioural difficulties. We work with all children in need of psychological support. We have specialist expertise in working with children looked after by Local Authorities and adopted children.
What can TCPS help with?
We can help with a variety of difficulties including:
- Difficulties in school
- Obsessive and/or Compulsive behaviour
- Family/household relationship difficulties
- Identity difficulties
- Therapeutic/complex Life Story Work
- Attachment difficulties
- Explosive outbursts
All therapeutic work is conducted by our dedicated team (see Our Team Profiles).
Who can commission therapeutic work?
Parents, Schools and Social Workers are often the people that would commission therapeutic work. Anyone can commission this work but we must have the consent of the person with parental responsibility for the child. For direct work with children the child must also give their consent.
What is the process?
Each situation is different and we tailor our service to you specifically. In general however we will have a brief discussion when you first make contact at which time we can discuss whether TCPS can help. We can then book an initial consultation appointment to start to understand the difficulties and devise a plan of how to help. We will sometimes need to spend some time assessing your needs to formulate a good plan of how to help.
TCPS will provide you with written information about the plan we work out together, details of the way we will measure change (so that we all know whether the work has been effective) and at the end of our work a letter to summarise what we have done.
Appointments are usually available very quickly. We usually recommend weekly, 1 hour appointments although these details can be negotiated to suit your needs.
What approach do you use?
Clinical Psychologists are trained in many theoretical models in order that they can draw on a variety of ways of thinking about a problem. The initial assessment will determine which approach would be most useful for you.
At TCPS we often draw from Cognitive Behavioural, Systemic, Psychodynamic and Attachment Theory based approaches.
How long will the therapeutic work take?
As the work is individually tailored the number of sessions will vary. Some clients see the benefits they want within 4 sessions and for some it takes many more. When we develop our plan together we will give you an indication of the likely number of sessions needed. After this time we will review together and decide whether further work is necessary. Unfortunately it is impossible to be certain from the outset how long the work will take.
If you are based in Staffordshire, Birmingham and the Black Country, Derbyshire, Shropshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire or Northamptonshire just give us a call or send us an email to find out more. We also offer many of our services nationally throughout the UK.
“(Aarti) was a friendly professional and non-judgemental. We felt at ease and able to share without embarrassment.”
“We went through a really difficult time and had it not been for (Amber) we would have broken down as a family…support from her has been significant.”
“I cannot tell you how grateful I am to (Shivani), she has helped us so much as a family. Before my head was completely frazzled, I couldn’t find a solution to the simplest situation because of stress. My head now works, I can think clearly, handle situations and solve problems which going back a year, I would never of thought was possible”.
“She is the soul of the intervention, she changed my thinking about how to work with families.”
