The Child Psychology Service offers comprehensive assessments to meet your individual needs. Each assessment package includes a written report, a face to face jargon-free feedback session and an action plan of recommendations about how to help the child concerned.
If you are concerned that your child may be showing signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or other neurodevelopmental problems we are able to offer assessments to find out and support to help you afterwards. Whether you are curious about whether your child requires a diagnosis or simply want to know the best way to support your child we can help.
We offer specialist assessments to help differentiate between early trauma and ASD/ADHD. This is often particularly helpful for looked after and adopted children.
We take our guidance on how we deliver our service from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) to explore the presence of ASD, ADHD and/or Attachment Difficulties effectively and efficiently. This represents the gold standard of neurodevelopmental assessment processes so that families, schools and other professionals can be confident in the rigour and accuracy of our results.
Our multidisciplinary core team includes Clinical Psychologists and a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist. We have access to a Psychiatrist and an Occupational Therapist too. Each assessment will include at least two assessors (from different clinical backgrounds). This means that we can complete assessments quickly, expertly and efficiently.
“What will happen during the assessment?”
From the first appointment to conclusion, we aim for a maximum of a four-week turnaround.
We will initially decide how to assess each child via a discussion between a Clinical Psychologist and a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist. On the basis of that discussion we will devise a bespoke assessment package. Assessments will vary in length dependent upon the details and complexity of the child’s situation and presentation.
As a minimum each assessment will comprise a:
- Clinical interview with parents/carers obtaining a developmental history
- Liaison with nursery/school setting
- Clinical observation of the child/young person (this may include gold standard assessments such as the ADOS-2)
- Clinical multi-disciplinary discussion to conclude
- Diagnostic report
- Feedback to families, child/young person and/or relevant professionals.
If there are more complex needs present e.g. Attachment difficulties/Developmental Trauma, this may require further assessment from our team. Our specialist team are experts in working with and differentiating attachment difficulties that present similarly to Autism.
Once a conclusion has been reached, we will provide recommendations for further work to help you and your child to best deal with and/or overcome the difficulties identified. Please click on the intervention tab for details.
“What will the assessment cost?”
Children require different levels of assessment, therefore we cannot be precise about cost in advance but our assessments start from £1,050 (excluding travel).
